Wallpaper Depth Effect
The depth effect is an iOS feature that makes your lock screen wallpaper appear three-dimensional by placing the clock and widgets between the foreground subject and the background of the image.
Introduced with iOS 16, the depth effect uses machine learning to detect a subject in your wallpaper (like a person, animal, or building) and layers the lock screen clock behind it. This creates an illusion of depth where the subject appears to pop out in front of the time display.
For the depth effect to work, the wallpaper needs a clear subject with separation from the background. Portraits, standalone buildings, trees against the sky, and animals work well. Busy scenes or flat patterns usually don't trigger the effect.
One4Wall includes a dedicated Depth Effect wallpaper collection — images specifically composed to work with iOS's depth detection, with clear foreground subjects and clean backgrounds for the best 3D lock screen experience.
Tip: The depth effect requires iOS 16 or later and an iPhone with an A12 Bionic chip or newer. If the effect isn't available for a wallpaper, try repositioning the image or choosing one with a more defined foreground subject.
